Zusammenfassung:This folder contains thirty nine items, most of which are original letters written by James Clemens Jr. The letters of 1838 to 1840 concern the plight of Clemens's cousin Mary Jane Riddle, who was deserted and looted of her fortune by her husband Abram Riddle. Clemens, who took Mary Jane in, attempts to institute proceedings against a now bigamous Riddle. The letters of the 1850s and early 1860s, addressed to his daughter Helen I. Clemens, discuss her studies and conduct, family news, and the new St. Louis house. Also here are 1875 instructions for a cemetery monument in Danville, Kentucky to Clemens's parents and brothers.
