520 2 |a The Brother Daniel Lynch collection consists of a large amount of correspondence from Brother Daniel to his parents and other family members and from parents and family members to Brother Daniel. A significant portion of the correspondence is between Brother Daniel and his mother Claire Langlois Lynch and father Daniel Lynch, Sr. Much of Brother Daniel's correspondence refers to the everyday events at St. Edward's University and describes daily life as the prefect of a university dormitory. This correspondence is rich with observations and anecdotes about the university and its environs and mainly covers the time period from 1940-1997. The collection also contains course materials Brother Daniel used in environmental science classes between 1989 and 1996 and articles and news releases concerning his environmental work in the Austin area. Drafts, research and unfinished manuscripts related to his many publications are included, as well as copies of all publications. Materials concerning Brother Daniel's childhood and education include scrapbooks, school papers from elementary and high school and a copy of his Ph.D dissertation "Ecology of the Aspen Groveland in Glacier County, Montana." The collection also includes materials relating to Brother Daniel's work as a park ranger in Glacier National Park, Montana. This portion of the collection includes numerous slides taken by Brother Daniel during his tenure in the park. In addition to Brother Daniel's prolific correspondence, the highlights of the collection include an oral history interview with Brother Daniel conducted by Professor Richard Hughes in 1991 and a manuscript that Brother Daniel was in the process of writing at the time of his death that contains botanical data from a 19 county area (170 mile radius of Austin) collected over approximately 30 years. Also of interest are approximately 1600 botanical slides taken by Brother Daniel in his lifetime that were recently arranged and cataloged by his colleague Professor Jimmy Mills for inclusion in a Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center project about Brother Daniel.
