Background Conservative political philosopher, born in 1907; professor of government at the University of Notre Dame, 1955-1997. Niemeyer wrote about political theory, ideology, communism, totalitarianism, the modern world, and Christianity. He served as an advisor to Barry Goldwater, as a member of the Republican National Committee's Task Force on Foreign Policy, and as chairman of the Board of Foreign Scholarships in the Reagan administration. He served as an Episcopalian deacon beginning in 1973 and as an Episcopalian priest beginning in 1980. Before his death he converted to Roman Catholicism. He had an interest in early music and played the recorder and viola da gamba. He died in 1997. Voegelin, Eric. Also included is an article manuscript (approximately 45 pages) sent by Montgomery to Niemeyer entitled "Modern: Modernism, Modernist -- A Preliminary Exploration of Our Intellectual Manner," a book review by Montgomery from Chronicles (March 1990) entitled "A Meditation on a Meditation," and an article by Deal W. Hudson from Crisis (May 1989) entitled "Marion Montgomery's Summa: A Journey through the American Mind." CGNM 3/01 Marion Montgomery 1987 A 192-page manuscript which Montgomery sent to Niemeyer for comments in 1987. The manuscript represents a portion of a book manuscript on the subject of the liberal arts and is entitled "Words, Words, Words: The Feeding of the Larger Body." CGNM 3/02 Marion Montgomery 1987 Two papers/articles by Montgomery written in 1987 and sent to Niemeyer for evaluation: "Eric Voegelin as Prophetic Philosopher" (37 pages), and "The Quest for Community Ground" (74 pages). The latter was published in Modern Age in two installments, as is indicated by a letter from the journal's editor to Montgomery dated 11 June 1987. CGNM 3/23 Eric Voegelin Review 1975 A number of essay-reviews of the fourth volume of Voegelin's Order and History, The Ecumenic Age (1974), a lengthy response by Voegelin to one of these reviews (that of Altizer), and approximately 20 pages of Niemeyer's handwritten notes on the volume. Among the essays reviewing Voegelin's work are: Eugene Webb's "Eric Voegelin's Interpretation of Revelation" (39 pages), Niemeyer's "Eric Voegelin's Philosophy and the Drama of Mankind" (31 pages), Thomas J. Wittfogel dating throughout the 1950s and early 60s, treating of Communism in the Soviet Union and China, and Marxist-Leninist ideology. Also included are a few letters from Wittfogel to Niemeyer written during the early 60s. CGNM 3/28 Karl A. Wittfogel 1950-1961 Several reprinted articles by Wittfogel (including many from a series in The New Leader during the 1950s) as well as a booklet containing a series of lectures for a course entitled "From Marx to Mao" (Telecourses -- University of Washington, 1960). CGNM 3/29 Karl A. Wittfogel 1950-1960 Continuation of previous two folders, containing over a dozen reprinted articles by Wittfogel on Marxism, Mao Tse-Tung, and Communist China. CGNM 3/30 Karl A. CGNM 3-6/ Subjects CGNM 3/31 American Education and Communism 1957 Materials relating to Niemeyer's participation on the National Committee on American Education and Communism, established by the Foundation for Religious Action in the Social and Civil Order (FRASCO) in 1957. Included are an issue of The Blessings of Liberty (published by FRASCO), the minutes of a meeting of the Committee on American Education and Communism held on February 7, 1957, and a pamphlet describing FRASCO. CGNM 3/32 Articles by others 1971-1990 A large collection of articles by other authors dating from the 1970s to the 1990s. CGNM 3/33 Articles by others 1907-1979 Similar to previous folder, a large collection of articles by others dating primarily from the 1970s. CGNM 4/01 Doctors of Modernity: Darwin, Marx, Freud / by R.F. Baum A 108-page draft manuscript of R. F. Baum's Doctors of Modernity: Darwin, Marx, and Freud (published in 1988) with occasional penciled comments and corrections by Niemeyer. Niemeyer's corrections are very sparse, and are heavily concentrated in the section on Marx. All of the comments are brief and apparently minor, often consisting simply of a question mark in the margin or a circled word. CGNM 4/02 Between Nothingness and Paradise 1970-1976 A number of published scholarly reviews of Niemeyer's Between Nothingness and Paradise (LSU Press, 1971) as well as periodic royalty earnings reports from LSU Press. There is also some correspondence between Niemeyer, LSU Press, and Buckley regarding arrangements for Buckley to receive 275 copies of the book at a discounted rate. Also included are reviewers' comments on Niemeyer's manuscript prior to publication and Niemeyer's responses to these comments. CGNM 4/03 Bibliography 1957-1958 6 pamphlets/order forms from publishers (1957-1958). One is from Oxford University Press for books by Ernest Barker, another from University of Wisconsin Press for The First International: Minutes of the Hague Congress of 1872, with Related Documents (ed. and trans. Hans H. Gerth), another from University of California Press for Aggression and World Order: A Critique of United Nations Theories of Aggression (Julius Stone), and one from the College Paperback Service for a variety of classroom texts (there are also two from German publishers). The only one with markings is that from the College Paperback Service, on which Niemeyer wrote an order for 50 copies each of Aristotle's Constitution of Athens , Gierke's Natural Law and the Theory of Society , 1500-1800, Aquinas' The Political Ideas , Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws , and Julien Benda's The Betrayal of the Intellectuals . CGNM 4/04 William F. Buckley, Jr. - Notre Dame Commencement 1978 Focuses on Buckley's commencement address at Notre Dame in 1978. Included are a complete text of the address, an article by Buckley from The Washington Star Syndicate regarding the commencement, an excerpt from the Congressional Record of June 22, 1978 containing a speech by Congressman Robert K. Dornan in praise of Buckley's address, three issues of the National Review from 1978, a few letters between Buckley, Niemeyer, and others regarding the commencement address, and a draft of Buckley's address heavily corrected by Niemeyer. In the July 7, 1978 issue of the National Review are two pages of hand-written notes on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "A World Split Apart" (Harvard commencement address). CGNM 4/06 The Catholic University 1974 Typed manuscript (with occasional handwritten corrections) of "The New Need for the Catholic University," published in the Review of Politics 37 (Oct. 1975): 479-489. There are also 15 pages of handwritten notes relating to the topic of the article, as well as 8 pages from the 1974 Notre Dame Magazine which includes 5 articles written in response to the previous year's report of the Committee on University Priorities at Notre Dame. There is also a 3-page exchange between a Notre Dame faculty member (Julian Pleasants) and Father James Burtchaell, C. S. C. (Provost) regarding the interpretation of the Committee's report with respect to the hiring of faculty of the University. CGNM 4/07 Center for Soviet and East European Studies - Notre Dame 1956 2-page brief descriptions of courses offered at Notre Dame for academic year 1956-1957 on Communism, the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Niemeyer is listed as teaching a graduate course on "Communist Ideology" which covers Marx and Engels as well as Lenin and Stalin. Also a 4-page document describing the Center for Soviet and East European Studies at the University of Notre Dame with a list of faculty members, including Niemeyer. This document also lists Niemeyer's course on "Communist Ideology." CGNM 4/08 China and the United Nations 1960s A large collection of materials relating to the representation of China in the U.N. dating from the early 1950s to the late 1960s. There is nothing in Niemeyer's hand; the materials consist of two booklets, one printed by the U.N. and one by the American-Asian Educational Exchange on the Chinese U.N. representation question, more than a dozen transcripts of speeches by the Chairmen of the Chinese Delegation to the U.N. opposing the representation of the Communist People's Republic dating from 1952-1967, and a 20-page document from the American-Asian Educational Exchange detailing the "Positions of the Republic of China on the Question of Chinese Representation in the United Nations." CGNM 4/09 China and the United Nations 1945-1967 A large amount of background material and supporting documents from the U.N. and the U.S. Department of State concerning the topic of a discussion panel in which Niemeyer participated in September 1967, namely, the "legal and technical aspects of Chinese representation in the United Nations" (Memorandum from Marvin Liebman to discussants). The panel consisted of 8 members (including Niemeyer) and produced a study on "The Status of China in the United Nations" (written primarily by Stefan T. Possony), although only a heavily corrected rough draft and correspondence regarding it are present in the folder. CGNM 4/10 China, Japan 1967 5 letters: two from Paul Yupin, Archbishop of Nanking and Rector Magnificus of Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, inviting Niemeyer to visit and lecture (which was accepted) and arranging his visit in September 1967; one from Japanese Professor Inoki regarding Niemeyer's visit to Japan also in the fall of 1967; one from David Rowe to the Vice President and Premier of Taiwan C. K. Yen introducing and commending Niemeyer to him; and one to Niemeyer from Masataka Kosaka regarding Niemeyer's visit to Japan in 1967. There is also a list of attendants for Niemeyer's lecture at the Kyoto International Hotel in October 1967, and two small packets of notes taken evidently in Taiwan. One appears to be in support of a lecture on Chinese communism, and the other regards more practical matters relating to his visit. CGNM 4/11 China, Japan 1967 More than a dozen pamphlets and booklets received during Niemeyer's 1967 visit to Fu Jen University in Taiwan. The booklets all concern one of three subjects: Fu Jen University itself, the military of the Republic of China, and the Taiwanese land reform movement. There is also a large collection of business cards, most from Taiwanese professors, officials, and businessmen, but also one of Niemeyer's own and a few in German. Lastly, there is a section from the Mainichi Daily News (Oct. 5, 1967) which includes an article on Niemeyer's lecture in Kyoto entitled "Prof. Niemeyer Says Communist Object Remains Unchanged." CGNM 4/12 China, Satellites 1956-1958 A 94-page report entitled "A Short History of Chinese Communism," the October 20, 1958 issue of The New Leader reprinted by the American-Asian Educational Exchange which consists of an article entitled "Communist China: Power and Prospects" by Richard L. Walker, and over a dozen cut-outs from the New York Times paper and magazine from 1958. CGNM 4/13 Christianity and Communism Interview 1984 The March 1984 issue of New Heaven New Earth which contains an interview with Niemeyer entitled "Christianity and Communism." In this interview Niemeyer speaks of the origins and central characteristics of Marxism, distinguishes Marxism from Leninism, and describes the relationship of both to Christianity and belief in God. CGNM 4/14 Churches and Marxism 1935-1961 3 unmarked manuscripts of Harvard Divinity School faculty member Paul Tillich's (evidently unpublished) 17-page essay entitled "The Christian and the Marxist View of Man" (1935). The debate regarding the alleged communist affiliations of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. is documented by a 9-page excerpt from the House Congressional Record of March 3, 1960 and a pamphlet prepared by the National Council in 1960 denying any sympathies with Communism and even accusing its accusers of advancing the communist agenda. There is also a 6-page document entitled "Can the General Board of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. Deny Responsibility for Any Action of the Fifth World Order Study Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, November 18-21, 1958?" CGNM 4/15 Communist Mind 1960s 2 cut-out newspaper articles on Soviet Russia, a copy of a "Memorandum Submitted to Department of Defense on Propaganda Activities of Military Personnel" by Fulbright in the Senate (copy from Congressional Record, August 2, 1961), and typed drafts (with handwritten corrections) of what appear to be a few chapters of Deceitful Peace: A New Look at the Soviet Threat (New Rochelle, N.Y.: Arlington House, 1971). There are also two pages of handwritten notes regarding the book and a letter from Niemeyer to Arlington Publishers (Nov. 29, 1966) including a plan for the book. CGNM 4/16 Conference on European Problems (CEP) 1988-1993 A large collection of newspaper articles, documents, and conference papers (2 by Niemeyer) focusing on the meetings of the Conference on European Problems from 1988-1993. One paper by Niemeyer is an 8-page talk entitled "Beyond Institutions of Power and Patterns of Profit," and another is a 12-page paper entitled "Reorientation Required." A letter from Richard B. Foster of June 1, 1988 indicates that "Reorientation Required" was to be published in Comparative Strategy Vol. 7, No. 4, although this doesn't appear in the Selected Bibliography. CGNM 4/17 Conference on European Problems (CEP) 1986-1987 Letters and documents relating to the establishment of the Conference on European Problems in 1986, including a list of members and officers (Niemeyer as President) and plans for a conference in Kloster Banz. There are also a number of newspaper and magazine articles from 1986-1989. Of most interest is a draft of a paper (with accompanying handwritten notes) by Niemeyer entitled "Western Weaknesses in the Ideological Struggle," apparently unpublished according to the available Bibliography. The paper contains an assessment of the "human rights" basis for U.S. foreign policy, a probing analysis of the non-Western ideological mind, and an explanation of the failure of the U.S. to "leave our message in countries and areas which we could militarily wrest from the enemy." Although it is aimed towards communist ideology, it possesses a continuing relevance for the struggle of the West against Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East. CGNM 4/18 Conference on Unity of Sciences 1975-1976 Conference papers and brief correspondence relating to the 1975 International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences. An article by Henryk Skolimowski entitled "Knowledge and Values" from The Ecologist (Jan. 1975) is also included along with brief correspondence between Niemeyer and Skolimowski. The two conference papers include one by Eugene P. Wigner entitled "The Unity of Science," and one by William G. Pollard entitled "Is Religion Functional as a Source of a Standard of Value Today?" which contains frequent handwritten markings and comments by Niemeyer. CGNM 4/19 Days and Works - National Review Columns 1973-1977 Numerous letters of response to Niemeyer's column in the National Review from 1974-1977, as well as more than 20 pages of Niemeyer's notes for various articles in this column. Also included is a draft of an article which appeared in Niemeyer's NR column entitled "Common Sense." CGNM 4/20 Deceitful Peace 1966-1975 Materials relating to the publication of Deceitful Peace: A New Look at the Soviet Threat (N.Y.: Arlington House, 1971). Included are periodic royalty reports and correspondence between Niemeyer and Arlington House, personal letters to Niemeyer regarding the book, and numerous published reviews. CGNM 4/21 Democracy and Civil Disobedience 13 pages of handwritten notes relating to the topic of democracy and civil disobedience. Also a 19-page paper by Joseph Dunner entitled "Democratic Theory and Civil Disobedience" with frequent penciled underlining. CGNM 4/22 Derecho Internacional 1935? A 152-page printed copy of a work apparently by Niemeyer (according to an information card attached to the last page) in Spanish entitled Derecho Internacional (Madrid, 1935). It is not listed in the Bibliography, and does not appear to be a translation of any other published work. CGNM 4/23 Encyclopedia of the American Right (EAR) 1992-1993 Materials relating to the Encyclopedia of the American Right from 1992-1993, edited by Gregory Wolfe and including Niemeyer on the Advisory Board. Contains letters and memorandums between Wolfe and the Advisory Board members, lists of entries in the encyclopedia including names of contributors, and some materials relating to the entry for Stanley Parry, Holy Cross priest and Political Science faculty member at Notre Dame. CGNM 4/24 Encyclopedia of the American Right (EAR) 1990 Materials relating to the Encyclopedia of the American Right from 1990. Included are a brief correspondence between Wolfe (editor) and Niemeyer regarding the plan of the encyclopedia and Niemeyer's contributions, an early list of entries, guidelines for contributors, and printed versions of Niemeyer's contributions to the encyclopedia. These contributions include "Restoration of Political Theory," "Marxism, Critique of," "Totalitarianism," "The New Science of Politics," and "Ideology." CGNM 4/25 Examination Questions 1976-1979 Contains final examination questions from 5 or 6 courses taught by Niemeyer during the period from 1976-1979. There is also one page of handwritten notes on Plato's Republic and one page of review questions for a final examination for an introductory political theory course. CGNM 4/26 Freedom Academy 1959 Materials relating to the establishment of the Freedom Academy by the Freedom Commission Act of 1959 (H.R. 3880). Includes an official copy of the proposed bill in its entirety, two copies of Niemeyer's statement to the Internal Security Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee of the United States Senate regarding the bill, 4 pages from the Congressional Record of the House of Herlong's speech introducing the bill, a 9-page "Summary of Educational Activities Within the Executive Branch of the Government," a typed draft of Niemeyer's address to the Senate committee with handwritten corrections, and a N.Y. Times article entitled "Revival of Faith Urged by Malik." Also included are numerous copies of a "Final Communique" from J. M. CGNM 4/27 Germany (Totalitarianism) 1940-1944 Dozens of typed pages (with frequent handwritten corrections and notes) of what appear to be lecture notes from 1939-1944 (Princeton). The topics include "Antidemocratic Movements," "Background of the Nazi Hegemony in Europe," "Interwar Development of Germany," "Government in Pre-Hitler Germany," "The Challenge to Democracy," "Conditions of Dictatorship," "Organization for Power: The Case of the Third Reich," "The Nazi Technique of Power," "The Chances of Resistance Against Nazi Power," and "General Conditions of National Socialism in Germany." There are also two pages of handwritten notes relating to the lecture topics. CGNM 4/28 Gothic Architecture and Iconography 1985 Two typed papers (7 and 5 pages respectively) on the topic of Gothic architecture and art more generally, with special emphasis on drawing out the intellectual and religious underpinnings of this art from the writings of Abbot Suger (12th century France) and Dionysius the Areopagite. Neither of these papers appear to have been published. Also included are a short excerpt of Suger's writings as well as a short section of Dionysius' writings, along with an article from the Wall Street Journal (June 2, 1992) entitled "Medieval Art in All Its Glory." CGNM 4/29 Guanojuato 1990 A large collection (more than 40 pages) of typed and handwritten lecture notes from an introductory political theory course and a course entitled "The Essence off Modernity: Seminar on Eric Voegelin's Anamnesis ." The subjects of the notes include Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Thomas, Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau among others. CGNM 4/30 Handbook on World Communism 1958-1959 Extensive correspondence dating from 1958-1959 relating to the writing and publication of Handbook on Communism , including a draft of a chapter from one of the contributors. CGNM 4/31 Handbook on World Communism A 47-page report (in German) containing German reviews of the Handbook on Communism . Also included are two newspaper articles: one is a review of the book from a German newspaper (in German), and the other is from the South Bend Tribune (May 11, 1959) describing the condemnation of the book by a Red party organ in the Soviet Union. CGNM 4/32 Harper's Article on Notre Dame by Peter Schrag 1967 A copy of the May 1967 issue of Harper's magazine, the cover story of which is entitled "Notre Dame: Our First Great Catholic University?" by Peter Schrag. Also included is a brief 1-page response to the article from a Notre Dame publication written by Tom Henehan. In addition, there is a letter from Niemeyer to Schrag in which he politely objects to Schrag's labeling him a "Goldwater Republican," and a response from Schrag defending his wording. CGNM 4/33 Hillsdale College 1979 An appreciation card to Niemeyer, dated May 8, 1979, from the Episcopal Chaplain to Hillsdale College for serving as "Presider at the Weekly Campus Eucharists" at Hillsdale College. CGNM 4/34 Hillsdale College 1974-1981 6 issues of imprimis , a publication of Hillsdale College, dating from 1974-1979. There are two copies of the April 1974 issue, which contains an article by Niemeyer entitled "Ethics and Politics in Communism," the October 1977 issue containing another article by Niemeyer entitled "The Loss and Recovery of History," and three from 1979 containing articles by others. CGNM 4/35 Hitler's Propaganda Contains two related, unpublished studies (both 60 pages) on Nazi propaganda theories and methods. One is entitled "Nazi Theories on Propaganda Methods: Report Submitted to Operations Research Office" (with "for confidential use only" handwritten on title page and dated April 28, 1951), and the other is entitled "Commentary on Hitler's Theories on Propaganda." The latter is contained in its own labeled folder, and contains a table of contents and appendix. Also included are 10 pages of well-organized typed notes on Goebbels' Diaries and Hitler's Mein Kampf . CGNM 4/36 India 9 pages of handwritten notes and a collection of articles and reports dating from the middle to late 1960s relating to the history, culture, religion, and politics of India. The collected materials range from scholarly reports and articles (two by Robert Crane of Duke University) to more popular pamphlets on Indian dance and Hindu films. CGNM 4/37 India 1972 Correspondence, documents, and handwritten notes regarding the 1972 Summer Seminar of the Indiana Consortium for International Programs in New Delhi, India. There is an interesting 2-page letter from Niemeyer to John Stabler containing his impressions from the trip to India, dozens of loose pages of handwritten notes, and a spiral-bound notebook (approx. 25 pages) containing chronologically-ordered handwritten notes on the lectures and events of the Seminar in India. Also included are a list of the names and affiliations of the seminar attendees, and a detailed 7-page schedule of events for the seminar. CGNM 5/01 India Continuation of the collection of 4/37, centering on the Summer Institute Program for the Indiana Consortium in India during the summer of 1972. Among the assortment of items included are three articles by Zaheer Masood Quraishi on political issues in India, a list of books on Indian politics from a bookseller/publisher in Delhi, a roadmap of central India, a report on the "Linguistic Variation in India," a paper by M. N. Srinivas entitled "Changing Institutions and Values in Modern India," two articles in German on Indian culture and politics, and a collection of newspaper articles on India from the early 1970s. CGNM 5/02 India 1972 A few tourist pamphlets on India, 8 Indian business cards, over a dozen blank postcards from India, an interesting booklet/essay by Quraishi entitled "The President of India: a political interpretation," a copy of Vol. 1, No. 1 of the Claremont Journal of Public Affairs , and a typed manuscript (unmarked) of Harry Jaffa's "Introduction to Second Edition of Crisis of the House Divided" (University of Washington Press, 1972). CGNM 5/03 Instituto Panamericano de Estudias 1990-1991 Correspondence and other materials relating to the Instituto Panamericano De Estudios Politicos Summer Programs of 1990 and 1991 at Notre Dame. A list of program courses for the 1991 program is included, with Niemeyer offering a course entitled "The Understanding of Our Time" which includes readings from Camus, Voegelin, Lubac, and Loewith. There is also a letter from Niemeyer to Richard Allen dated Nov. 20, 1990 which describes the circumstances surrounding the formation of the Institute as well as its purposes. The remainder of the folder is occupied by travel receipts and correspondence relating to the transportation of various professors to Notre Dame for the Summer Program. CGNM 5/04 Intercultural Research 1974 Documents and correspondence regarding the activities of the Institute of Intercultural Research from 1974. Also included are two letters from Prof. Joseph Doherty to Niemeyer attempting to arrange a meeting during a trip to Chicago to discuss the research program of the Institute. CGNM 5/05 Italy 1994 Extensive correspondence between Niemeyer and Marco Respinti regarding Niemeyer's visit to Italy in 1994. Also included is an Italian translation (by Respinti) of Niemeyer's lecture at the Centro Culturale di Milano in 1994, as well as a brief (7-page) talk entitled "Faith and Reason in Eric Voegelin." CGNM 5/06 Italy 1996 Two typed (with handwritten additions) pages in German regarding a 1996 visit to Italy. CGNM 5/07 Japan 1970 Correspondence and other items relating to Niemeyer's lecturing trip to Japan and Korea in 1970. This trip constituted a "Seminar on Communist Block Affairs" sponsored by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. This particular seminar was part of the Bureau's "Short Term American Grantees Program." In addition to various travel-related documents, there are typed lecture notes (5 pages each) for two of Niemeyer's lectures: "History in Philosophy and Ideology," and "The Function of Historical Materialism." CGNM 5/08 Japan - Nature of Communism 1970 The March 1970 issue of Review: A Quarterly Journal for the Study of Communism and Communist Countries , a Japanese publication, consisting of a study on "The Soviet Young Generation." There is also a pamphlet on the "Japan and Asia" Lecture Series at Sophia University in Japan, as well as copies of the lecture notes for two of the lecturers participating in the series. Also included are one page of handwritten notes on the development of political science, and the text (2 pages) of a "Protest Statement" by Solzhenitsyn. CGNM 5/09 Japan, Korea 1970-1971 Very large collection of materials relating to Niemeyer's visit to Japan and Korea in 1970. Included are many letters to and from American embassy officials in Japan and Korea, complete itineraries and schedules of events for Niemeyer's visit, dozens of articles from Japanese and Korean newspapers, postcards, and tourist pamphlets. There is also the 4-page text of a talk given by Niemeyer entitled "Whither Japan?" as well as 6 pages of typed lecture notes on Japanese politics, self-understanding, and culture. CGNM 5/10 Cicero and the Politics of Public Orthodoxy / by Willmoore Kendall 28-page manuscript of an article entitled "Cicero and the Politics of the Public Orthodoxy," by Willmoore Kendall and Frederick D. Wilhelmsen of the University of Dallas. This article was solicited by Modern Age as part of a symposium on the subject of "Christianity in Sight of the Third Millennium." Included are 6 handwritten pages of notes by Niemeyer on a 1969 article regarding a New Left-inspired march in Baltimore, two issues of the Washington Report from 1970 containing analyses of the New Left in the U.S. and West Germany, an article by J. Edgar Hoover on the activities of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and the text of a 1969 speech by Nixon entitled "Freedom: A Condition, and a Process." CGNM 5/18 The New Left More materials relating to the New Left dating from 1968-1971. There is an 11-page paper by Iokibe entitled "Nichiren and Jien" which Iokibe sent to Niemeyer, and dozens of pages of Niemeyer's handwritten notes on the subject. It seems from a letter of March 18, 1972 that the collaborative project on Nichiren was never realized by Niemeyer and Iokibe. CGNM 5/20 Oglethorpe University 1946-1966 Materials relating to Oglethorpe University dating from 1945-1966. CGNM 5/24 Pangle - Rhodes 1989-1990 Extensive correspondence (often in excess of 4 pages) between James Rhodes and Tom Pangle on the subject of Strauss's thought and also its relationship to Voegelin, dating from 1989-90. This correspondence was relayed by Rhodes to Niemeyer. Included are 6 pages of Niemeyer's handwritten notes, an article by William Carlo entitled "The Role of Philosophy in Politics," an 18-page paper by Arthur Utz entitled "The principle of Subsidiarity and Contemporary Natural law," a paper by Fr. Costanzo entitled "St. Augustine: God, Man, and Society," and a 9-page paper by Voegelin (marked "To be revised") entitled "On Toynbee's Study of History." There is also an 8-page typed plan for a project entitled "The Intellectual Confrontation of Communism" with a description of the nature and method of the project, a list of personnel, a provisional list of the first series of conferences, and an estimate of basic costs for the project. CGNM 5/29 Political Theory A published book review, a paper, and a collection of typed lectures by Willmoore Kendall from the late 1940s and early 1950s. The book review is entitled "The Function of Intelligence," reviewing Strategic Intelligence by Sherman Kent (Princeton, 1949); the paper (12 pages) is entitled "The Areopagitica Reconsidered;" and the lectures are from a Conference on Democratic Theory (The Foundation for American Studies, California) and comprise a 114-page draft manuscript of a work which was intended for eventual publication. There are also 4 pages of typed notes on a conference held at Niemeyer's home on May 15, 1956 which included Msgr. De Raemaker, Fr. Bohensky, Fr. Parry, and Dr. Hermens. CGNM 5/30 Politics and Religion 3 sets of typed lecture notes, one (10-page) draft of a paper, and more than 20 pages of handwritten notes on the topic of politics and religion. The 3 lectures are respectively entitled "Politics and Religion" (6 pages), "Religion and Politics" (3 pages), and "The New Left" (3 pages). The 10-page paper is untitled (it treats of Christianity and citizenship) and is marked by frequent corrections. CGNM 5/31 Politics - My Ideas About 75 loose pages of handwritten notes (most in German) covering a wide range of political philosophical topics, and 6 handwritten pages on the topic of "Faith in Reality." Of these latter 6 pages, 2 consist of a continuous mini-essay, while the other 4 consist of a series of connected notes on the topic. CGNM 6/01 Power (IADC) 1952-1975 6 sets of typed lecture notes, a few pages of handwritten notes, a reprint of an article by Niemeyer, and a reprint of an article by Kenneth Waltz. The lecture notes are concerned with various combinations of the related concepts of "nation," "state," "government," "power," and "political strategy;" one lecture is labeled "IADC," apparently given at the Inter-American Defense College. Niemeyer's article is entitled "The Balance-Sheet of the League Experiment" (International Organization VI.4, 1952), and Waltz's article is entitled "Force and the Balance of Power" (Journal of International Affairs XXI.2, 1967). CGNM 6/02 Princeton 1937-1941 Materials relating to Niemeyer's time at Princeton. Included are two copies of a brief article on Niemeyer's son Herman, two issues (1940-41) of the Nassau Sovereign, two information booklets on Princeton campus life, a syllabus for a Comparative Government course (1941), and official as well as informal notification of Niemeyer's appointment as Lecturer in Politics at Princeton University (1937). CGNM 6/03 Princeton Conference 1951/12 A 36-page report on the Princeton Inn Conference (attended by Niemeyer) of Dec. 14-16, 1951, written by George D. Stoddard of the University of Illinois. The topic of the conference was rather open-ended and informal, treating the general question of how to "formulate a definitive and compelling statement of the meaning of the American experience" (p. 2). CGNM 6/04 Public and Semipublic Letters 1949-1970 A collection of letters and correspondence dating from 1949-1959, as well as a folder of newspaper clippings from this period. Much of the correspondence relates to William F. Buckley's speeches at the National War College in 1956 and 1958, the latter of which was especially controversial according to Niemeyer. Also included is a letter to the New York Times by Niemeyer entitled "To Control Germany" (1949). CGNM 6/05 Quotes Two brief (1-page) cut-out articles on Christian theological issues, and a small (2-page) collection of typed quotations (Auden, Wordsworth, and others). CGNM 6/06 Recovery of History An 18-page, heavily corrected draft manuscript of Niemeyer's article "The Loss and Recovery of History" (Imprimis , Oct. 1977). There are also approximately 30 pages of handwritten notes and 10 pages of typed notes, most of which relate directly to the topic of the article. CGNM 6/07 The Recovery of the Sacred 1988 Two corrected drafts (19 and 16 pages) of Niemeyer's lecture, entitled "The Recovery of the Sacred," given at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's (ISI) 35th Anniversary celebration in November of 1988. Whether this manuscript has been published cannot be ascertained from the bibliography, since it was written around the same time as the bibliography was compiled. Also included are two loose pages from the Nov. 25, 1988 issue of National Review and 6 pages of handwritten notes relating to the ISI lecture. CGNM 6/08 GN Resumes 1972 A collection of a few of Niemeyer's CV's (Curricula Vitae) from the late 1960s and early 1970s, including lists of publications and educational and professional histories. CGNM 6/09 Revelation 1965/1969 Correspondence relating to Niemeyer's participation in the Liberty Fund's Seminar on Revelation of July 18-20, 1969. A list of participants in the seminar as well as a schedule are included. There is also a 23-page text of a lecture given at the Seminar by Carl Henry entitled "Divine Revelation in the Judeo-Christian Understanding." CGNM 6/10 James V. Schall 6 articles by James V. Schall, S.J. from the late 1970s and early 80s. These include "Revelation, Reason and Politics: Catholic Reflexions on Strauss," "Human rights: the 'so-called' Judaeo-Christian tradition," "The Best Form of Government: A perspective on the Continuity of Political Theory," "Displacing Damnation: The Neglect of Hell in Political Theory," and "The Old Testament and political theory." CGNM 6/11 Simposio Interamericano 1981 A pamphlet for the 1981 "Simposio Interamericano" in Buenos Aires, at which Niemeyer gave a lecture entitled "Propiedad, principios religiosos y progreso." This is accompanied by 5 pages of typed notes on Latin America entitled "First Impressions of Latin America" which catalogue Niemeyer's observations from his visits to Chile and other South and Latin American countries. Also included are two copies of a 19-page manuscript (apparently unpublished) entitled "Structures, Revolutions and Christianity," which confronts manifestations of the "liberation theology" popular in Latin America. Another manuscript is included (12 pages) which is entitled "Eric Voegelin and American Conservatives," also apparently unpublished (at least with this title). Lastly, there is a 1981 Wall Street Journal article entitled "A Letter on Marxist Analysis by Christians." CGNM 6/12 Simposio Interamericano 1981 A 153-page booklet containing the texts of the lectures given at the Simposio Interamericano of 1981. Included is the Spanish-language text of Niemeyer's manuscript (in 6/11) entitled "Estructuras, revolucion y cristianismo" (Structures, Revolutions and Christianity). CGNM 6/13 Social Science - Notre Dame Curriculum 1956 Large amount of correspondence, reports, and notes relating to the development of an integrated social science course (economics, sociology, and politics) at Notre Dame in 1956. Included are numerous typed notes of meetings of the Social Science Committee (of which Niemeyer was a member) during the summer of 1956, numerous versions and portions of syllabi for the course, and a 7-page letter from Father Hesburgh to Father Sheedy (Dean of Arts and Letters) on June 10, 1956, detailing plans for improvement of the curriculum (including the social science course). CGNM 6/14 Social Science - Notre Dame Curriculum 1954-1955 Two booklets containing multiple syllabi for various courses in the Arts and Letters, including History, Philosophy, English, and Languages (dating from 1954-1955). The booklets are marked "for the correlation committee" and "for the correlation program," indicating that these were used in conjunction with an effort to integrate the Notre Dame curriculum. CGNM 6/15 Spain 1935,1949 A collection of "cupones" from a Madrid bank in 1949, a list of courses taught at the Federacion de Asociaciones Espanolas de Estudios Internacionales (Madrid) in 1935 which includes Niemeyer's course entitled "Historia Internacional," and a two-page "Programa" (outline) of Niemeyer's course. CGNM 6/16 Stalin 1952 "A Selection of Stalin's Public Statements in the Postwar Period (1945-1951)" dated March 1952. The selection is 129 pages long, is organized chronologically by year, and includes a complete table of contents, although no editor is listed or source for the collection as a whole. Also included are the transcripts of two brief (1-page) interviews with Stalin in 1952 and the 3-page text of a speech by Stalin at the XIX Congress of the C.P. of the Soviet Union. CGNM 6/17 Steering Committee - Reports for Meeting - Notre Dame CAP 1975 A collection of reports, correspondence, and membership lists relating to the Committee on Academic Progress (CAP) of the College of Arts and Letters from 1975. Niemeyer was the Chairman of the Committee at this time, and compiled the notes and reports of the CAP Steering Committee meetings in 1975. Also included is a copy of an article from the November 21, 1975 Observer describing the decline of the relevance of the CAP and its "elitist" reputation. CGNM 6/21 Theoretical Foundations - Communist Ideology 1967 Two sets of lecture notes (both from 1967) and one 15-page typed manuscript with handwritten comments. One group of lecture notes consists of 6 pages on the topic of "Communist Ideology and the Communist Phenomenon" (Spring 1967), and the other of 4 pages on the topic of "Ideological Foundations of Communism" (Jan. 4, 1967). The manuscript is untitled and doesn't include the name of the author, and is on the topic of Communist ideology and precisely why it is wrong. CGNM 6/22 Total Critique, etc. Over 2 dozen handwritten pages of notes (apparently dating from the late 1950s) on the concept of the "total critique." The notes treat of St. Augustine, Marx, Hegel, modern liberalism, and totalitarianism in relation to the idea of a "total critique" of society. CGNM 6/24 Turkey 1972-1973 Correspondence and travel-related documents relating to Niemeyer's service as Public Member on the USIA (U.S. Information Agency) Foreign Service Inspection team to Turkey from My 17 through June 2, 1973. Also included are typed lecture notes (by Niemeyer and other instructors), exam questions, assigned paper topics, and a roster of students for the Notre Dame seminar. Included are numerous letters between Niemeyer and the Church hierarchies of the dioceses of both the Roman Catholic Church and Episcopal Church, between Niemeyer and former parishioners, and between Niemeyer and his son Paul. The articles included relate to the large-scale conversion of Episcopalians to the Orthodox or Roman Catholic Churches in the wake of the increasing liberalism of the Episcopal Church, as well as a number of articles relating to the propriety of ordaining women to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church.
