Background Students at the University of Notre Dame founded the Council for the International Lay Apostolate during the 1961-1962 academic year "to do something positive to express their concern for other people". The members organized and carried out summer projects to help needy people in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Colorado, Harlem, Harrisburg, and South Bend. During the school year they formed a community to learn about human need in the United States and Latin America, to deepen their understanding of their role as lay apostles, and to relate their lives to their faith.
