John Carroll, R.C. Abp. of Baltimore, responded to C.H. Wharton's A letter to the Roman Catholics of...Worcester, which response apparently generated Hawkins' A few remarks on Dr. Carroll's address; both Wharton & Hawkins were apostate R.C. priests. The "late religious order" suppressed by Clement was the Jesuits.
