Attributed to printer of the 1483 Jordanus by Polain in 1932. The Jordanus printer was identified as Georg Husner in V. Scholderer, "The Printer of Jordanus of Quedlinburg," Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America 46 (1952) 179-185 and supported by F. Geldner, Die deutschen Inkunabeldrucker, Stuttgart, 1968, Bd. 1, p. 65-66.
Volume has no numeration. Our copy lacks title page and so has only 810 p. not the full 812 p. Citations are given by folio in accordance with the standard references.
Composed of 52 gatherings without signatures. Royal 2° in 8s: [1-2 (1 missing) 3¡ 4-12 13¡ 14-23 24-25¡ 26 27¡ 28-31 32ℓ° 33-35 36¡ 37-48 49¡ 50-52].
Paper from super royal sheets of about 68x45 cm. with vertical chain marks about every 3 cm. Individual page size is 34.5x22.5 cm.
Watermarks in center of every fourth folio. Most of text contains the watermark P surmounted by a trifoliate design, similar to Piccard, Bd. 4, section 6, 287 from Ulm, ca. 1480. The blank f. 250 and most of the miracles of the Virgin has a six petal flower watermark similar to Piccard, Bd. 12, section 2, 710 from Basel, which Piccard only dates to a use in 1485.
In the miracles text on f. 402 is a watermark of a large P with a quatrefoil design similar to Piccard, Bd. 4, section 12, 672 from Basel, 1482. Also on the front flyleaf is a watermark, partly cut during repairs, with a bull's head tau similar to Piccard, Bd. 2, section 16, 140 from Hohenrechberg and Landsberg, 1482, 1483.

Twelve point black letter type as in the 1483 Jordanus, see BM 15th cent., v. 1, p. 131 and plate 13, 160 headlines and 99 text. 53 lines (f. 24r) 240 (255) x 150 mm.; 91 mm. for 20 lines; 2 columns.
Infilled initials painted in red and blue at the start of each text. Red initials throughout. At f. 23r initial, 70x70 mm., in red and blue inhabited with dragons and flowers.
Binding of tooled leather over boards, 205x340 mm. with lozenges containing winged and displayed double headed eagles, inner border of arabesque guillochet with pinecones and rosettes. Outer border has squares containing winged griffens rampant and diamonds with floral displays. Backbone is 10 cm. with four raised bands. German Cistercian design, compare with O. Mazal, Europäische Einbandkunst, Graz, 1990, item 51.
Note in pencil on back cover by Gabriel, "Restored by Hans Macdonald, 43 West 61st Street, N.Y. 16013 for $80."
Provenance: On inside front cover and verso of photocopied title page is bookplate: "Ex libris Astrik L. Gabriel." On recto of front flyleaf and verso of back flyleaf is donor bookplate: "Gift of Astrik L. Gabriel, Corresponding member of the French and Bavarian Academies of Sciences." Another Gabriel donor bookplate is on the inside front cover honoring Prof. Roger Schmitz.
On verso of front flyleaf is signature of former owner "I. Chas. Geries or Gerieb (?), 1644." Also on verso is "Brunnbach" and on f. 23r: "Sum B[eate] M[arie] V[irginis] in Brunnbach." This refers to the library at the Cistercian cloister in Bronnbach near Würzburg, probably the original owner who bound the volume in the 15th century.
