Salvian was a 5th-century ascetic of southern Gaul. In De gubernatione Dei "he endeavours to prove a divine explanation of the barbarian invasions. With the orthodox but depraved Romans he contrasts the barbarians: infidel or Arians, but virtuous" (Cath. encyclopedia).
