It was commonly supposed that fhe J ackets would pile up an impressive Score in this, their � fil'st ga me of the present sea�son. Jt \VIIS simply 8 case of too much mud and an offensive which ,'cfuscd to "click." The � same Jilek of a concentrated of� fcnsin dri\'c which character�ized the \Viley game wa~ again in evidence. � The dny dawned bright and clenl', about the most ideal day for footba ll seen, up to that point this 80.180n. Old Sol � beamed down in all his paternal glory lind benignity. However, he WlJrs driven to cover about mid-cillj' Hnd hid himself behind n dense blnnket of dark, lower. illg storm clouds and then came the deluge,lt ruined j it poured. By gl.lme time the rain had stopped but playing conditions were adverse, to say the least. Eureka's Ca ptain won the � toss a nd elected to defend the south goal and Capt. St. Leger elected to kick off. The game was on. The ball was kicked far down the center of the field and the ba11 cn!'I'ier wus tackled after I'ellll'ning it about 5 yards. ,'fhe � ";ul'ck<t backs then began a series of plunges which netted Ihem two first downs before they were forced to kick. The try for extra point failed when DcspinlJsse did not kick goal. A few minutes lat.er the half cndcd. Scorc 6 to 0, in favor of Xnvicr. Second Half. Xavier kicked� off to Eureka. The safety man received the ball on his fifteen � yard line, mudc a slight lid� vunce und wns then tackl ed by McDonald. On the next play Smith in terceptcd a pass on Eurel,3 's thirty y~H'd linc. Here Du Conge beglln to lug the balll:llld made a !icl'ies of nice gains. Workman also came in for his siwre of ball toting. Howcver, Xavier lost the ball on downs. The best work for the Yellow Jackets wus done in the backfif'ld by Smith, Du Conge and \Vorkman. Due to the weather, the crowd wus cxceedingly thin. WILDCATS INVADE YELLOW JACKET NEST CLAW WAY TO 43 to 0 WIN all Octobcr 4th the Xavier Yellow J ackcts played host to the Wiley '.s PUI'ple Wildcats in their new home, the Xavicr Stadium..Alt.hough the Stadium iwd becn dedicated the pl'cviou.s week the "baptism of fire" did not occur until October 4th, Before the game was called the 'Viley team joincd the Xa\'iel' team and both ma)'ched ':lcross the field to a position directly ill fl'ont of the stunds. The X~l\"iel' Anthem was played. The two teams then turned al"ound and marched across the fie ld. 11ccompnnied by the of. ficil:l li' to t.he f1RgpoJ e whc]'e a ~r('at Amf'l'ican Flag was slow!." hoisted to the strains of Ihe StUI' Spangled Bunnel'. This concludcd, the te11ms Ilg11in marched buck to the original position in f"ont of the stnnds. At this timc :Miss Xaviel' (Miss Mildred OUI'dina) then tossed the ball to Captain Franklin of Wiley and the game was on. Captain F'r'anklin won the toss and electcd 10 defcnd t il(' nOl'ih goal, Captain St. l leger elected to I�cccive. Both t<>flms lined lip. }\s the bull was kid,ed a thunderous shout went up hom thc biggest crowd to wit� ness such 11 ga me in Ncw A)'� leans. The kick was an onside kick and Capt. Franklin recovcl'ed fO I' 'Viley, On the first play Higgs, \Viley's fullback fum� bled the ball and Xavier 1'e� coyered on her own thirty five rard line. The Yellow Jackets then began their offensive which somehow did not func� tion. au the third down, after having failcd to gain materially the ball was punted. It was a puny effort and imme� diately 'Viley began an of. fcnsive which carried over the Rush goal line fol' the first louchdo\\'n of the day. Higgs carried the ball over. Captain Franklin 's capable toe added the extra point, Score 7 to O. The teams lined up again. This time the ball WHS booted do\\"n the center of the field for ;1 good distance. Du Congc re� turning it several yards. How. ever, the Xavier ofrensi\'e did not guin again and they were forced to kick as before. Again 'Viley made a drive down the field interspersed with fumbles. This drive ended about thc twenty�fivc yard line, ft'om which point Captain Pl'anklin kicked a beautiful field gO<l!. Score 10 to O. Soon afterward the first quarter ended. 'l'he teams changed goals ancI began the battle anew. During thc COursc of this second quarter a blocked kick aided materially in produc� ing the second touchdown of the game. Again Captain Franklin kicked the extra point. Scorc Wiley 17, Xavier O. Thus the score remained through the first half. At the beginning of tile sec� ond half Captain St. I.Jcger clected to receive and Captain 1<'l'unklin elected to defend the north goal. During this sec� and balf the \Viley offensive began to function effectively and the score mounted can� siderably as the game pro� gresscd. Early in the third quartcr Combs, 'Wiley's AII�American center, sustained a fractured collar bone and wus forced to retire from the game. DUI'ing this quarter " Strcak" l~vans, Wilc~"s star hlllf�b11Ck, was also forced to I'etil'c I' l'om the game with a neck injul�Y. SCOI'C lit the en d of the thil�d qual'tf'I'. 'Vile~' 31, Xavier O. During thc fourth quartct� a bad pass from center bounded on \Vorkman 's ,ghoulder and was reco\'ered on the fi ve yard line b~' a 'Wiley piayeI'. HCI'e came Ihe gem of the ga me. Wiley was held fol' foUl' downs at this point of the game. DRINK--� EVER Y BOTTLE STERILIZED Xavier gained possession of the ball on her own one yard line. 'Valkcr standing behind the goal line attempted to kick out of danger. The kick was blocked. A Vviley man recover� ed for a touchdown. The try for extra point fniled. Tlte other touchdown dUl'ing this (luarter resulted from a long pass to \Viley's left end who was not observed by the defense. The pass was for about 20 yards. Thc try for point again failed, The nearest that the Yellow J ackcts came to scoring was in the fourth quarter. A kicked ball struck a Wiley man and bounded into the ail', Du� Conge e11me in Oll the run, Cl:1ught the ball and sped nearly forty yards, before being downed on 'Viley's fifteen yal'd line. Dunn was sent in at this stage. lIe, howevel', only gained five Ylll'ds in thc t.hree uttcmpts. A pass to Priestly wns Illlowecl when a Wiley back intcrferred. The gain was how� ever one yard short of thc llccessary first down. '11he Yellow Jackets though defellted fought gallantly and unceasingly throughout the contest. Capt11in St. Leger and Chapitnl especially played well for the Jackets, while Work� man came in for his share of glory.
