Just to give an idea of the impact of the Xavier Dillard rivalry, by the time the women game started at 5:30, Dillard's gym had already been packed for nearly an hour. When 5:30 arrived, everybody in the place was "ready, ready." The same artist also uses the phrase "Talk that stuff now roll with it," so of course the XU fans talked plenty of stuff, and to their delight, first the Gold Nuggets and then the Rush rolled right over the DU Devils. The Gold Nuggets came out and got right down to business. Bridled with enthu-siasm, the Gold Nuggets jumped to an early lead and never looked back. Unfortunately for Dillard, no one seemed to be able to squelch the fire that had been lit under the Gold Nuggets leading scorer Cassee Davis. Every time she en-tered the game, she left Dillard defenders suffering the effects of smoke inhalation as time and time again she blazed her way to the basket for a score. It was obvious she was on a mission and after the 28 points, 14 rebound show she put on. The Gold Nuggets put Dillard away early in the second half, quickly building a lead that would prove to be insurmount-able. XU finished the game shooting 46 per-cent from the field, and with seven minutes left to go had Dillard fans hoping not for a win, but instead for a final score reflecting a lead of less than 20 points. For the Gold Nuggets, everyone did their part, everyone scored and in the end, everyone was happy. Everyone rooting for Xavier, that is. Leading the way for the Dillard Blue Devils were Una Jones with 10 points and eight rebounds along with Que Nash with nine points and 11 rebounds. They helped keep Dillard as close as they could for as long as they could. But as a team the lady Devils could only manage to shoot a dismal 22 percent from the field. After dropping their last three games, Coach Dale Valdery and the Gold Rush were looking to come out ofthe Dillard game with nothing other than a victory. When game time came, the determination was seen on all the players faces. They were ready, they were ready, they were ready ready. The first half was a see-saw battle. Both teams had their share of the lead, but neither team could pull far enough away to give a clear outcome of the ending. Fan warfare was rag-ing in the stands, while the battle for bragging rights surged forward on the 01 court. In the second half, Xavier fans began to get a little nervous as every time one blinked an eye another XU player was being called for their third or fourth foul. Dillard number 42, Semple, shot 17 free throws alone. Despite the fouls, the Rush were able to not only maintain the lead, but were able to build a double digit lead that with three minutes to go seemed sure to take them to victory. It was not yet time to celebrate however, because three Xavier turnovers in a row allowed Dillard to by Tammicka Logan Sports Editor After the seventh GCAC confer-ence game ofthe season, the Xavier Gold Nuggets remain the only undefeated team. Against Louisiana College, the Gold Nuggets scored 83 points while the Wildcats managed 69. The top scorer and rebounder ofthe game was junior forward Tarana Bell with 18 points and six re-bounds. Senior forward Cassee Davis had 17 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals. As a team the Gold Nuggets shot 52 percent from the field, scoring 34 for 65. From the free-throw line, the team shot 44 for 23, 61 percent. At the half Xavier led 38-36. The team was shooting 15-31, 48 percent from the field and 61percent from the free throw line. In the second half the Gold Nuggets turned it up a notch, dishing out 45 points while allowing Louisiana College cut the lead to a deficit that was quite possible to overcome. The Devils poured their hearts into their final charge, but the Gold rush held strong and when the final buzzer rang, the much sought after vic-tory was at hand. Although the Gold Rush relied on a very strong team effort to win the game, leading along the way was: jun-ior guard Sam Butler with 19 points and senior for-ward Keith Johnson with 15 points. The final score was 67-45. The Xavier Gold Nuggets and the Gold Rush got the best of their Dillard foes, and when Jubilee asks at the end of his song "What's the name of you school?" No one was seen not giving a proud resounding XU. 33 points. "The reason their is such a tremen-dous turn around in the second half is because coach Joseph has a rotation and it keeps everyone's legs fresh and everyone rested," sophomore forward Lesley Jeanpierre said. The Nuggets confer-ence record is now 7-0, and the Gold Nuggets are currently ranked 11th in the NAIA na-tional poll. The night brought vic-tory for both teams. The Xa-vier Gold Rush also defeated LouisianaCollege, 82-71. This marks the second win in a row for the Gold Rush. The Gold Rush's confer-ence record is currently 3-4. Could these last two wins be a sign of turnaround? The leading scorer for the Gold Rush was senior forward Keith Johnson with 22 points and seven rebounds while sopho-more guard Duane Cousin racked in 17 points and junior guard Sam Butler netted 16 points. The team had good percentages by the end of the game: 56 percent from the field, 73 percent from the 3-point line and 59 percent from the free throw line. Gold Nuggets break Rams' winning streak by Tammicka Logan Sports Editor A 1-4 conference record for the Xavier Gold Rush is disappointing, es-pecially after losing a game to the Uni-versity of Mobile that could have been won. The team lost all of its leverage in the last two min-utes of the game. A lead for the Gold Rush dwindled to a tie, 75-75. Mo-bile then passed up the Gold Rush to win 94 - 80 . At the half the margin was only two points, 37-39, Mobile. The Gold Rush shot 50percent from the field and 50percent from the free-throw line. Senior forward Keith Johnson led the team with 26 points. By the end ofthe game the team was 51 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Gold Nuggets went into this game undefeated, and their opponents were also undefeated. The Gold Nuggets knew that one team would leave the University of Mobile gym with their four-game winning streak coming to an end. The Gold Nuggets left the gym the only undefeated team in the confer-ence. "We did a good job at shutting down their key player" said sophomore center forward Kim White. The Gold Nuggets leading scorer was Junior guard Kimberly Simpkins with 19 points. She also had nine re-bounds. Other high scorers of the night were senior guard Vashita Wells with 14 points and senior forward Cassee Davis with 13 points and seven re-bounds. All in all, the Nuggets shot 53 per-cent from the field, 50 percent from the 3- point line and 65 percent from the free-throw line. w0a4r1,k. .:,„ • argil Nuggets and Rush tame Louisiana College Wildcats The Nuggets conference record is now 7-0, and the Gold Nuggets are currently ranked 11th in the NAIA national poll.
