Title in red and black; initials; head- and tail-pieces.
Each part has its own t.p.
"Erster Bund oder die 8. erste Theil."
"Only vol. I [of the 1st ed.], comprising the first eight parts, was reprinted. Although the collation is the same in both editions ... most of the volume is from a different setting of type. The two leaves of errata for vol. I found at the end of the first edition of part 8 are omitted, but not all of the errors noted are corrected. The half title of vol. I in this issue does not have the engraving on the verso of the half title as in the earlier edition." Cf. Sabin, 91982.
The first volume (8 parts) of the German Jesuit relations, 1642-1726, chiefly from Asia & America, based in part on the French Lettres Edifiantes, in part on the original manuscript reports of the German & other Missionaries; one of the important pieces of German Americana, including, e.g., a map of California & New Mexico; large old bookplate of Joh. Ernst Graf von Kueffstein, engraved by Nicolai, Vienna.
Referring to the first edition, Sabin (52376) states: "This highly valuable collection of missionary reports ... is mostly taken from unpublished manuscripts. Only the smaller part has been translated from the Lettres edifiantes." JCB, vol. I, 390, states: "This collection contains much curious and interesting matter respecting America and the West Indies, which is either purposely omitted in the Lettres edifiantes, or which was not accessible to the compilers of that important work."
Includes index.
