Item Description:Large woodcut title vignette of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan (1351-1402), who founded the Pavia Charterhouse in 1397, and dedicated it to the Virgin, within ruled and captioned frame: "Io. Galeacius Viceco. Dux Mediol. I. Mariae semper virgini. Cartus. Papa. a se fundatam dicavit. Anno M. CCC. XCVII"; t.p. in red and black; text in black, with large and small initials, captions, and liturgical instructions in red; small ornamental woodcut initials; tail-piece; text in two columns.
Prefatory note addressed to Petrus, Charterhouse prior, signed by scribe Laurentius Reboleti, and dated in Pavia on Aug. 28, 1560.
Calendar in red and black of saints' days for each month, with Dominical Letters, Golden Numbers, and Roman calendar dates in three columns at the left.
Contains three additional woodcuts within black-ruled borders (woodcut on verso of last leaf is a repeat of t.p. illustration). Woodcut of St. Bruno, founder of the Carthusian Order on verso of [maltese cross]₂; 4-panel woodcut on verso of V₂ entitled "Laudate Dominum in sanctis eius" depicts Christ's saints: apostles, monks, bishops, and women saints.
